Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam secured Cabinet support for the free distribution of 183,000 tabs among school children although it was objected by President Maithripala Sirisena.
The project will cost LKR 3.5 billion.
The President, from the start, held the view that a pilot project should be executed first on the circulation of electronic tablets. He had spoken out that a final decision could be taken subject to the results of the trial project.
The matter came up for discussion at the Cabinet meeting yesterday. A committee, appointed to look into the program, also held the free distribution tabs. Finally, the President gave in, allowing the Minister to get endorsement to proceed with the program.
Besides, President Maithripala Sirisena had yet another quarrel with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe by opposing a Cabinet proposal to increase some Port tariffs.
Minister of Ports and Shipping Sagala Ratnayake submitted a Cabinet paper seeking endorsement for tariff hikes.
