Govt. approves floating power plant

The Cabinet last week permitted the construction of a floating solar power plant with a capacity of 100MWs using Canadian technology.

The decision has been taken due to the dry weather conditions which the CEB is unable to meet demands.

The main backers of the plant run as a joint venture are Sri Lanka Mahaweli Authority, Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) and Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority based on a joint report by President Maithripala Sirisena and Power and Energy Minister Ravi Karunanayake.

The plant on water is said to store solar power in panels and batteries and is projected to be started in 2025.
