Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has ordered the police to charge those involved in violent acts on May 12 and 13 under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) Act and emergency regulations, it is learnt.
According to PM office, the situation had been brought under control by the police and the security forces by yesterday (15). Those involved in violence has been produced before court and imprisoned at the moment.
Violence was recounted in areas such as Wariyapola, Kurunegala, Kuliyapitiya, Nikaweratiya, Chilaw, Puttalam and Minuwangoda.
The police detained 14 persons in linking with incidents in Minuwangoda and nine of them were imprisoned till May 29 after being produced before court. The remaining five persons will be produced be before court soon.
