An indefinite curfew was braced in the Kalmunai, Chawalakade and Sammanthurai Police areas late Friday evening after a gun battle followed between STF personnel and an armed group in the Sainthamaruthu area in Kalmunai.
Police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara said an explosion was stated when security forces tried to search a suspicious man.
“When Police and Air Force personnel went to the scene, the gang had carried out an explosion targeting the search party. The Army had also come to their help,” the Police spokesman said, adding that steps were then taken to barricade off the area where the gang operated.
He said it was hard and impossible to report of any wounded at the scene as the operations were ongoing.
It was stated that one civilian killed several injured due to the gun battle and several dead bodies, believed to be terrorists seen on the ground.
A stock of more than 150 gelignite sticks, IS uniform, a large store of steel pellets, a drone, a suspicious van and a laptop were also found during the search operation in Samanthurai.
The police curfew in the other parts of the country was real from 10 pm on Friday to 4 am on Saturday.
