WhatsApp discovers surveillance attacks

Hackers were able to remotely connect surveillance software on phones and other devices using a major weakness in messaging app WhatsApp, it has been established.

WhatsApp, which is retained by Facebook, said the attack directed a “select number” of users and was coordinated by “an advanced cyber-actor”.

A fix was moved out on Friday.

On Monday, WhatsApp advised all of its 1.5 billion users to update their apps as an added security.
